Calling Vs. Career: What Am I Called to Do?

Updated: Dec 1, 2022

“What am I called to do?”

That’s probably one of the greatest

questions anyone could ask oneself. Every person on planet Earth wrestles with figuring out their purpose for being here. “Calling” is a deep-seeded purpose that perfectly resonates with the outcry of one’s soul and aligns with one’s giftings and skills.

Let’s first look at what a career is and how it differs from a calling. A career is decided; a calling is discovered. A career is natural; a calling is supernatural. A career can change; your calling does not. A career is done for money but a calling is for eternity. A career requires education but a calling requires anointing.

In order to find your career, you need to consider what you love to do, what provides financial security, what is not illegal, and what you can do to help others and glorify God. Do not worry about what career to choose, Paul says “whatever you do…do as unto the Lord” (Col. 3:23).

Your career is your choice. Remember, you do not need to be in full-time ministry to be a full-time Christian. Jesus is looking for full-time Christians who will bring glory to his name in college, at work, in a restaurant or coffee shop, anywhere. So, whatever your career may be, bring glory to God by being the light and salt there.
